Inshore fishing in Charleston & Folly Beach is hard to beat right now. Anglers of all ages and experience are finding plenty of action to keep them busy during their charters. A flood of bait has proved to be a blessing the past few weeks as hungry game fish stay motivated to feed. Juvenile shrimp and finger mullet have taken up residence in the creeks and flats giving Flounder, Redfish and Speckled Trout plenty of reasons to eat. Be prepared to run into speedy Spanish Mackerel and bait shredding Blue fish along the way. Bull Redfish and several species of sharks are roaming the channels and sandbars and can be targeted just a few minutes from most of our launch sites. Keeping a few rods rigged and ready with different types of tackle will keep your mind in the game and give you the chance to respond to opportunities as they present themselves. A rod or two with a popping cork rigged with a circle hook, jig and Z-Man minnow or DOA shrimp should be in your arsenal. A Carolina rig should be ready to plunk down beside structure and a rods rigged with a swim baits and diamond jig or Gotcha plugs should have you ready for whatever you run into during your time on the water. A good cast net will also give you the opportunity to supplement the bait you pick up on the way to the water.
If it’s larger fish you are targeting you can’t beat live Blue Crabs, Menhaden and Mullet fished cut or whole. Expect to pick up Black Drum, Sharks and Bull Reds this time of year. Tarpon have been boated along our coast and it’s prime time to be on the hunt for the Silver Kings. Check in with the guys at your local tackle shop to tell you what is working best and what you need to have to tilt the odds in your favor.
