Sheepshead, Redfish, Weakfish and other species will gather around to ambush schools of baits migrating south. Depending on water temperatures this activity can last through the end of January. We usually bottom fish with live and cut bait though some days the fish respond well to artificial baits like metal jigs or plastics.
Inshore fishing charters will focus on Speckled Trout and Redfish in the creeks as those fish also gather up to gorge on shrimp and minnows while they are plentiful. Most times we will fish with live bait and soft plastic baits on light tackle. This doesn’t mean that those fish are small though as it’s common to catch Redfish well over the 10 lb mark!
Trout and Redfish like to feed in moving water so find some current and set yourself up to take a few casts. If the fish are there you should know within a few minutes. If you don’t get a bite try moving a few hundred feet down the bank and give it another shot. Some Trout bites can be pretty subtle so I tend to use lighter tackle so you can feel the fish pick up the lure or bait. Redfish will usually give your bait a pretty hard thump so you will have no problem knowing you are hooked up on one. Hope this helps you get ready for some of the best fishing of the year!
